Development of CDM Programmes of Activities (January 2012)
The Belgian federal government decided to support the development of two CDM programmes: a renewable energy CDM programme of activities in Rwanda and a treatment of municipal waste CDM programme of activities in Mozambique. More information on these initiatives can be found here.

The Belgian Minister of Climate & Energy signs an ERPA with Howrah Mills Company Ltd. (India) for a biomass project
The Belgian Minister of Climate and Energy, Mr. Paul Magnette, signed a contract in March 2009 with Howrah Mills Company Ltd. for the purchase of the CERs from a small scale biomass CDM project in Howrah, West-Bengal (India). The project uses jute biomass residues as a substitution for coal in the steam generating boiler onsite and contributes to sustainable development in the area. This project is the 7th project to be contracted by the Belgian government within the framework of its JI/CDM Tender Programme, and the 3rd project within the framework of the Second Belgian JI/CDM Tender, after the ‘Palmas de Espino’ CDM project in Peru and the ‘Shree Bhawani’ CDM project in India, for which ERPA’s were respectively signed in February and December 2008.

The Belgian Minister of Climate and Energy, Mr. Paul Magnette, signed a contract in December 2008 with Shree Bhawani Paper Mills Ltd. for the purchase of the CERs from a Biomass based Cogeneration Power Project in Uttar Pradesh (India). The project will use Rice Husk for cogeneration and contributes to sustainable development in the area. This project is the 6th project to be contracted by the Belgian government within the framework of its JI/CDM Tender Programme, and the 2nd project within the framework of the Second Belgian JI/CDM Tender, after the ‘Palmas de Espino’ CDM project in Peru, for which an ERPA was already signed in February 2008.
The first two CDM projects of Cyprus have been contracted by the Belgian Tender
At the HusumWind conference in Germany, the Belgian JI/CDM Team signed two ERPA contracts with the first two CDM projects of Cyprus. The projects involve a 12 MW and a 31 MW wind park that will provide clean electricity to the Cypriotic national grid. With these projects Cyprus makes its first steps into the Wind energie sector as well as its first steps in the CDM world.
The Belgian Minister of the Environment signs an ERPA with Yash Papers Ltd. (India) for a biomass project
The Begian Minister of the Environment, Mr. Bruno Tobback, signed a contract with Yash Papers Ltd. for the purchase of the CERs from a Biomass based Cogeneration Power Project in Uttar Pradesh (India) on behalf of the Belgian State. The project will use Rice Husk, Bagasse Pith and Strong Black Liquor for cogeneration and aids sustainable development in the area.
Workshops in the Ukraine
A series of workshops have been held in the Ukraine (in Lugansk, Dnepropetrovsk and Kharkiv) early July 2007 in order to provide information on the second Belgian JI/CDM tender. These workshops were organised by Global Carbon.

Carbon Expo 2007, Cologne
For the third consecutive year, part of the Belgian JI/CDM team was present at Carbon Expo in Cologne, May 2-4 2007. And again it was a pleasure to meet so many colleagues and partners. This was an excellent opportunity to meet several interested parties and to establish new contacts. Many people visited our stand and showed great interest in the Belgian JI/CDM Tender, proving it to be an attractive and interesting option to sell your carbon credits.
During a side event of Gold Standard, Tine Heyse gave a presentation on the Belgian JI/CDM Tender that was well received among the numerous interested visitors. This proves the large and still increasing interest for the Belgian JI/CDM Tender.
First Workshop on the Belgian JI/CDM tender, April 24th 2007, Brussels
The workshop of the second Belgian JI/CDM Tender was a great success. Different presentations explained the JI and CDM project cycle and the modalities of the Belgian JI/CDM Tender to both national and international participants. Many participants enjoyed the presentations and networking opportunity. In fact, the response was that big that some bilateral meetings had to be rescheduled to later days.
The Gold Standard Foundation supports the second Belgian JI/CDM Tender
The Belgian federal government continues to attract sustainable JI and CDM projects. For this purpose, sustainability criteria based on the Gold Standard sustainable development indicators are used. www.cdmgoldstandard.org.

First Belgian CDM contract signed with geothermal project in El Salvador
The Belgian Environment Minister signed the first CDM contract on the occasion of the Climate Summit in Nairobi. This contract provides for the purchase of between 193,000 and 262,000 emission reduction units generated by a new geothermal electric power station built by the Salvadorian LaGeo company.
Belgian JI/CDM Tender presented in Central America
The second Belgian federal JI/CDM Tender was presented on the meeting on ‘Financial Opportunities for renewable and environmental projects in Central America’ in Guatemala. Many visitors, project developers and CDM consultants took the opportunity to learn more about the Belgian purchase program.
